I stumbled upon an old baseball
I stumbled upon an old baseball,
Behind a basement door.
The players have all since left the field,
Yet I find I still want more.
This life is filled with brevity;
Childhood laughter
And levity,
Reduced to photograph
and memory,
At our kitchen table.
While I would not wish,
To turn back time,
For you have your life,
And I have mine,
'tis but a dream,
(and imagine that)
Me with the ball,
You with the bat,
And that silly, over-sized
Baseball cap,
Knockin' the skin offa that.
"Good hit, son, good hit!
You'd better go see
If you can find it."
You found it, son,
And so much more.
So much for me to be
Thankful for,
But I think I'm going to dust this off,
And put it in my den.
Each time that I look at it,
I'll see "slugger" once again.
